Item Description

The [Kondo] 8buYA is a traditional, single-piece Japanese stone dividing wedge chip forged from high-grade tool steel, engineered to cleave rocks along a precise predetermined line. Unlike round-hole expansion systems, this is a solid, one-piece wedge designed to be driven directly into shallow slots pre-cut with a diamond blade or tapped into expanding structural cracks. By lining up two or more of these 8buYA chips in a row and striking them progressively with a Setto hammer, immense downward and lateral cleavage pressure is applied, resulting in a beautiful, organic natural split face. This traditional flat-wedge method leaves behind the historic rectangular indentation marks known as "Ya-ana" (wedge holes)—the exact same masonry signatures visible on the grand stone walls of ancient Japanese castles, shrines, and Buddhist temples. It remains an indispensable tool for contemporary Niwashi (Japanese gardeners) and Dry Stone Wallers (DSW) seeking authentic historic texturing. ⚠️ WARNING: Always wear impact-resistant safety goggles and heavy leather gloves when driving steel wedges, as metal spalling and sharp stone flying fragments pose severe physical danger. Ensure the striking hammer hits the wedge head perfectly square to prevent dangerous deflections.
