Item Description

The [Kondo] tobiYA is a specialized, single-piece Japanese stone dividing wedge chip meticulously proportioned for shaping landscape stones, particularly hard boulders and traditional Japanese stepping stones known as "Tobi-ishi." Forged as a monolithic block of high-grade tool steel, this wedge is engineered to be inserted directly into shallow slot lines scored by a diamond saw, or driven into progressive structural splits during active splitting operations. When a series of multiple tobiYA chips are aligned and struck sequentially with a striking hammer, they generate immense outward tension that pops the stone apart cleanly while preserving a highly valued, organic natural broken face. The resulting rectangular wedge impressions perfectly mimic the historic tooling marks found on stone paths throughout ancient Japanese temples and castle ruins, providing exceptional rustic character for professional Niwashi (landscape gardeners) and Dry Stone Wallers (DSW). ⚠️ WARNING: Heavy impacts on tool steel can generate flying metal splinters and sharp rock chips. High-quality safety goggles and steel-toe boots are required. Never strike a wedge head that shows severe mushrooming without grinding down the edges first.
