Item Description
This handcrafted [Kondo] Carbide-Tipped HaTombo is a specialized stone finishing hammer engineered to dress and level stone surfaces after initial roughing. While the Japanese market typically handles these tools as separate heads, Tetsufuku delivers this authentic tool pre-installed with a high-grade Japanese oak (Kashi) handle for optimized swing control and out-of-the-box readiness. Functioning like a handheld chisel with an integrated handle, the HaTombo is operated strictly by swinging it directly with your own arm energy to tap away high spots, completely eliminating the need for a separate Setto striking hammer. It allows craftsmen to perfect flat planes on structural stones in Dry Stone Walling (DSW), refine traditional garden lanterns and steps for Niwashi (Japanese gardeners), and execute detailed architectural sculpting with excellent control.
The head features a dual carbide configuration: a 4mmx40mm Koyasuke-style pitching blade ("Ha") on one side for popping off sharp edges, and a 6mmx6mm pointed bit ("Tombo") on the other for pin-point surface reduction. ⚠️ WARNING: Because both sides of the head are integrated with hard tungsten carbide tips, you must never strike this tool with a Setto hammer or any other steel implement, as doing so will instantly shatter the carbide or break the brazed joint. This tool is strictly for direct swinging against stone. Avoid prying, dragging, or twisting the tips under load.

Yoji Kondo is the boss and the second of Kondo stonemason's tools factory, and he is an expert that has been worked for 50 years. He is known to Japanese craftsmen handling stones as one of stonemason's tools makers of carbide who are few in Japan now. The notes on use about Hatombo. [KONDO]
Hammer a stone softly, rhythmically and vertically by all means. The properties of steel and carbide is superior in wear resistance and it is the harder, the more fragile. Conversely, soft steel and carbide are superior in durability and shock resistance. This product has been setting hard condition, if you wield or hit strongly, there is a possibility that brass brazing will break. In addition, it is a main factor of breaking to hammer a stone diagonally. Please hammer a stone vertically by all means. The Japanese craftsmen using our product habitually know this point well enough, but we would like overseas users to keep it in mind.
